Midyear Evaluation Meeting Held in Şanlıurfa

The United Nations Extended Gender Thematic Group gathered on May 30, 2007 in Şanlıurfa’s El Ruha Hotel to evaluate the United Nations Joint Programme to Protect and Promote the Human Rights of Women and Girls (UNJP).
The United Nations Joint Programme 2007 Midyear Evaluation Meeting was held in Şanlıurfa. The vast range of participants included representatives from the United Nations, high level officials from the Ministry of Interior, as well as representatives from the governor’s offices and municipalities of the Programme cities, NGOs, universities and the media.
The meeting took
place in two sessions. In the morning session, the Programme
partners talked about the developments regarding the Programme, and
reaffirmed their commitment. The afternoon session was basically the
evaluation of the Programme. The official six-month review report
was distributed to the participants in this session. A final session
included comments, recommendations and requests by the participants
United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Assistant Representative for Turkey, Dr. Tunga Tüzer opened the meeting, commenting that the United Nations Joint Programme was initiated with an inclusive and participatory approach, as opposed to the conventional top-down, centralized approach, adding that the main purpose of the Programme is to support the creation of Women Friendly Cities. Dr. Tüzer also said that the Joint Programme is supported by all of the United Nations agencies in Turkey, and that it is a pioneering programme in creating partnerships among civil society, bilaterals, public and private sectors. He asserted that the next step will be focusing on the Local Equality Action Plans and the establishment of the Women Friendly Cities The Chair of the Board of Trustees of Sabancı Foundation Güler Sabancı said that the Sabancı Foundation aims to “create Women Friendly Cities through inclusion of women into decision making mechanisms, designing models for provision of women-friendly local services, capacity building in local governments and NGOS, and preparation of action plans.”

Ministry of Interior UNJP National Director Mustafa Çöğgün stated that the transparent and participatory structure of the Joint Programme has become an exemplary model, and that the Ministry of Interior will continue to support the Programme.

The UN Joint Programme Manager Nevin Şenol informed the partners on the progress of the Programme in the afternoon session, and provided the participants with a draft calendar for the coming six months.
Programme Consultant academic Deniz Altay made
a presentation on the results and findings of the Women Friendly
City projects, implemented with university students in Van. Ayşe
Yüksel from Sabancı University also made a presentation on the
series of meetings with high school teachers and university
academics on raising awareness on gender equality, the ‘Purple
Certificate Program’ for local high school teachers that took place
in July 2007, and the ‘National Symposium on Women and Gender
Studies in the University.’ The final, Questions and Answers session
included comments, recommendations and request by the participants.
