Welcome to the United Nations Joint Programme e-Newsletter

Our quarterly newsletter provides our programme partners and the general public with detailed information on the progress of the Joint Programme. 

The Joint programme is a unique effort to provide better opportunities for women and girls in Turkey by building service capacity for local governments and enhancing collaboration between NGOs and government authorities.


UN Extended Gender Thematic Group convened in İstanbul to review the annual progress of the UN Joint Programme

UN Extended Gender Thematic Group convened in İstanbul Hilton Hotel on 13 November 2007 Tuesday to review the annual progress of the UN Joint Programme to Protect and Promote the Human Rights of Women and the Girl Child. Representatives of UN Agencies, high level officials from the Ministry of Interior, representatives of Sabancı Foundation and Sabancı University as well as representatives from the governor’s offices and municipalities of the Programme cities, NGOs, universities and the media attended the meeting. The Chair of the Board of Trustees of Sabancı Foundation Güler Sabancı, Undersecretary of Ministry of Interior Şahabettin Harput, Chair of UN Development Group and UNDP Administrator Kemal Derviş had delivered opening speeches in the morning session. In the afternoon session of the meeting, Programme Manager Nevin Şenol and Administrative/Finance Assistant Serhan Alemdar presented reports on the progress of UN Joint Programme then Ayşe Yüksel and Hülya Adak informed the participant about ‘Purple Certificate Programme’ and ‘National Symposium’ addressing high school teachers and academicians in the six Programme cities. Last session of the meeting devoted to local stakeholders. In this session, Nevşehir Governor Asım Hacımustafaoğlu, Kars Governor Mehmet Ufuk Erden, İzmir Deputy Governor Haluk Tunçsu, Trabzon Mayor Volkan Canalioğlu, Harran University Head of Public Health Department Prof. Dr. Zeynep Şimşek, Nevşehir Deputy Mayor Yusuf Kaya, Van Deputy Governor Hasan Yılmaz, Trabzon Chair of the Provincial Assembly Muhammet Balta, Kars Deputy Mayor Tuncay Daşdemir, Van Head of the Public Training Center, Muhyettin İnci summarized their work towards women friendly cities and commented on the ongoing work. Sabancı Foundation Announced the Call for Proposals for the Grant Programme on 26 February 2008

  • Legal non-profit civil society organizations,
  • Governorates, municipalities, special provincial administrations and their affiliated agencies,
  • Chamber of Commerce, Chamber of Industry and legal professional organizations
  • Universities and its affiliated bodies including faculties, institutes, colleges, research centers functioning in İzmir, Kars, Nevşehir, Şanlıurfa, Trabzon and Van are eligible for the application.
Deadline for the receipt of applications is 18 April 2008

Institutional framework is set up in line with local equality action plan in all Programme cities

‘UNJP Provincial (Women) Coordination Committees’ are established in the six Programme cities. Its aims are to coordinate, guide, enforce and follow up all actions regarding gender equality in the city. It brings together all stakeholders including public authorities, women’s NGOs, CBOs and private sector.

‘Equality (Women) Commissions’ are formed in the Provincial Assemblies in Izmir, Kars, Nevşehir, Şanlıurfa and Trabzon to mainstream gender in the Assemblies work.

8 March, International Women's Day celebrated in the six Programme cities...

8 March International Women's Day celebrated in the six Programme cities throughout the week. Only man who participated to the rally for 8 March in Nevşehir was the Deputy Governor of Nevşehir Mr. Ruhi Paker. Women street was set up in Trabzon during the week of 8 March in where women did sell their hand-made products. For the celebration of International Women's Day, a variety of activities organized by women in Kars. More >> 


Two new books within the framework of UN Joint Programme

A guide book entitled 'Local Governments and Women's Rights' and a book entitled 'Purple Certificate' that compiles the work of Sabancı University with high school teachers and academicians int the six Programme cities. More >> 


UNJP PARTNERS

United Nations Joint Programme to Protect and Promote the Human Rights of Women and Girls in Turkey is supported by all UN agencies operating in Turkey, in addition to several partners and bilateral donor countries.
A major contribution is provided by Hacı Ömer Sabancı Foundation. Originally Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom supported the UNJP. Recently France has provided financial support for the programme. Even a small contribution can make a big difference as the total of the contributions is always larger than the individual donations.

Ministry of Interior, Governor's Offices, Municipalities and Women’s NGOs of İzmir, Kars, Nevşehir, Şanlıurfa, Trabzon and Van are also programme partners.
